We were appointed to refine the interior design of the kitchen, dining room, hallway and pantry of this period property, reimagining these spaces to feel more open, practical and attuned to modern family life. Our focus was on enhancing spatial flow, material continuity and the overall character of the interiors. The house already had plenty of charm, but the layout no longer suited a growing household where the kitchen is central to daily living.
The design brief focused on retaining original charm while introducing a refined, functional and well-resolved interior. Every detail was considered, from architectural features and spatial flow to lighting and materiality, creating a home that feels elegant and grounded.
The wall between the kitchen and dining room was removed to improve flow, with door frames reinstated to match original detailing. The generous wall depth allowed for uplighters to softly illuminate the openings, while one doorway was made slightly taller to guide the eye through and enhance daylight.
In the dining room, original parquet flooring was restored and layered lighting was introduced, including dimmable joinery lights, uplighters, wall fittings and pendants. The palette is soft and muted, with rattan and polished brass accents, custom lampshades and wallpaper adding warmth and texture.
The hallway ceiling was raised to maximise height and light, with the original floor reinstated to bounce natural light and establish a clear visual link to the kitchen.
Throughout the kitchen and pantry, tumbled-edge porcelain tiles offer a durable yet refined finish. The layouts for these spaces were realised by the manufacturer, ensuring consistency with the project’s wider spatial and material language. Delicate glass pendants above the island help centre the space, and spice niches integrated into the oven cheeks offer both practicality and precision.
In the pantry, cabinetry conceals services while providing ample preparation space. Deep-set doorway panelling adds subtle architectural rhythm. Soft ambient lighting continues here, with dimmable strips fitted into the coving and beneath wall cabinets. Bespoke etched switches provide a considered final detail, nodding to the home’s past.
The result is a calm, timeless interior that blends original character with modern functionality, enhancing everyday living through thoughtful, intentional design.
